THE ROTARY CLUB OF AUCKLAND INC

What Rotarians get out of Rotary depends largely on what they put into it.

Many membership requirements are designed to help club members more fully participate in and enjoy their Rotary experience.

What do we expect from our members? Rotary is a service organisation that depends on the goodwill and commitment of members to be successful. These notes seek to explain expectations we believe are essential to our continued success.

OUR BASIC COMMITMENTS

  • We will attend luncheon and project team meetings, whenever possible.
  • We will apply for leave of absence if intending to be away for more than four consecutive Monday lunch meetings.
  • We will do ?make-up? attendance at another Rotary club meeting, whenever possible.
  • We will become actively involved in club project teams, fellowship and fundraising activities, as much as possible.
  • We will commit to doing our allocated duties. If we cannot, we will find substitutes.

Membership following induction

A new member can expect the assistance of their proposer to ease their integration into the life of the club for at least the first six months of membership. Assistance can take the form of introduction to other members, explanations of Club routines, and organising active involvement in one of the club project teams. TOC

Attendance at the Rotary Luncheon

The central focal point of the life of the Rotary club of Auckland is the Monday luncheon. This is where members develop and share their Rotary experience.

High profile and quality speakers are scheduled for the interest of members and guests.

Members are expected to attend every week but it is recognised that this is not always possible. TOC

Five Minute Speaker

A member may be invited to give a 5 minute talk at a lunch time meeting about their vocation, Rotary activity, or some recent and particularly interesting development. Our members welcome the opportunities to learn about members' lives and interests. The five minute limit is deemed entirely appropriate. The 5 minute speakers slot may sometimes be used by club leaders and others for general briefing or to update the membership on a particular activity. TOC

Leave of absence and apologies

For lengthy absences of more that 4 Mondays a request for a leave of absence should be addressed or emailed to our Executive Secretary. It is highly desirable for members to notify the Club Executive Secretary whenever they are unable to attend a full club meeting. Similarly, apologies to Project team leaders when appropriate will be appreciated to ensure meetings function efficiently and projects progress effectively. TOC

Make-ups

A member is encouraged wherever possible to make-up his/her attendance record by attending a meeting of another Rotary Club.

The greater Auckland area has many other Rotary Clubs that meet at lunchtime, and some schedule breakfast or dinner meetings.

Participating in "make-ups" at different clubs is an enjoyable way to see Rotary in action and compare how other clubs operate. A list of all other clubs in New Zealand and the Pacific Islands with their meeting places and times is available on the District website: www.rotary.org.nz

Your Rotary lapel badge entitles a member to attend any meeting of the nearly 33,000 clubs throughout the world. Our Club Executive Secretary has a directory of clubs overseas along with Rotary Club of Auckland Certificates that can be given to overseas clubs as a token of our friendship. Doing a make-up when travelling overseas is recommended; to enjoy the fellowship of a worldwide organisation is a richly rewarding experience of Rotary. TOC

Club Project Teams

Each member is appointed to at least one project team. Appointments usually change every year, though some continuity is important. The project teams and their objectives are detailed in the Club Register of Members and shortly on the Club website. Involvement in the activities of a project team and in club fellowship functions are considered essential to the Rotary experience. Members more quickly gain experience of club activities by being active participants. Attendance at project team meetings contributes towards both the individual and club attendance performance. TOC

Fellowship

Members are expected to support fellowship activities of both the Club and Project teams. The feeling of being a "Rotary Family" is fostered by involving partners whenever possible. TOC

New Members

Every Rotarian shares the responsibility for seeking new members qualified for unfilled classifications. The Club aims to have the widest possible representation of the business and professional life of the city.  The prospective member should normally be personally and actively engaged in business or a profession and reside within the greater Auckland area. TOC

Proposing a new member

A member should contact a member of the Membership Project Team to propose someone for membership. A process is established that allows for attendance at a luncheon(s), the completion of a Proposal form, finalisation of a classification, review and approval of the Board, formal induction into the club, and the new member's integration into fellowship activities and a club project. The detailed step by step process is documented separately. TOC

Member's information

Our website has a special section for members. This includes comprehensive details about club activities and the contact details of members. The members' section is password protected and is only available to current members of the club. TOC

Payment by members for dues, subscriptions or club services

It is expected that members will pay club invoices on time in accordance with normal practice or failing that, advise the club of any reason for withholding settlement on time. TOC
